Silicon carbide, also known as SiC, is a semiconductor base material composed of pure silicon and pure carbon. It is made of quartz sand, petroleum coke (or coal coke), wood chips (salt is required when producing green silicon carbide) and other raw materials through high-temperature smelting in a resistance furnace. Silicon carbide produced industrially in China is divided into two types: black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide:
① Black silicon carbide contains about 95% SiC, and its toughness is higher than green silicon carbide. It is mostly used to process materials with low tensile strength, such as glass, ceramics, stone, refractory materials, cast iron and non-ferrous metals.
② Green silicon carbide contains more than 97% SiC and has good self-sharpening properties. It is mostly used for processing cemented carbide, titanium alloy and optical glass. It is also used for honing cylinder liners and precision grinding of high-speed steel cutting tools.
Here are some of the main properties of silicon carbide:
1. High temperature resistance: Silicon carbide has good high temperature stability and heat resistance, can work stably for a long time in high temperature environments, and can withstand high temperatures up to 2700°C.
2. High thermal conductivity: Silicon carbide has a very high thermal conductivity, 3-4 times that of copper, and can effectively dissipate heat.
3. Corrosion resistance: Silicon carbide has good corrosion resistance and can work stably in various chemical media such as acids, alkalis, and salts.
4. High strength: Silicon carbide has high strength and tensile strength, which is more than 5 times that of steel.
5. High rigidity: Silicon carbide has high rigidity and elastic modulus, and can resist deformation and deformation well.
6. Thermal conductivity: The thermal conductivity of silicon carbide is higher than that of silicon, so silicon carbide has better heat dissipation performance.
